Safe Harbors of the Hudson, a Newburgh-based nonprofit dedicated to transforming lives and building community through housing and the arts, announced that it will present an exhibition of ‘Flowers for Our Grandmothers’, a community-based collaborative creative project led by Gabrielle Burton Hill, Francois Deschamps, and Jesse Flaitz. The exhibition will be presented from Friday, Sept. 27 through Sunday, Sept. 29 in the Lobby of the Cornerstone Residence as part of Newburgh Open Studios and will be on view daily through October 11.

‘Flowers for Our Grandmothers’ aims to represent and honor the lives, beauty, and wisdom of Black and African-American grandmothers in Newburgh. Participating grandmothers were interviewed, recorded, and photographed by the creative team, and the project includes an exhibition of photographs, a 52-page book with illustrations and narratives, and an audio interview archive. A soundtrack edited from interviews with participants will accompany the exhibition.

‘Flowers for our Grandmothers’ will open with a special reception and panel discussion featuring the participating grandmothers on Friday, Sept. 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cornerstone Residence Lobby. The exhibition is free and open to the public from 12 to 6 p.m. during Newburgh Open Studios weekend (September 28 and 29) and will continue daily from 12 to 4 p.m. through October 11.
