Garden Tour on tap for Sunday

Posted

The Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands has announced a full schedule of upcoming programs, exhibits and tours designed to showcase local history, horticulture and art throughout the spring and summer.

The lineup includes a monthly lecture series, the organization’s annual garden tour, a new exhibit highlighting the life of Hudson River School painter Thomas B. Pope, and expanded public access to the society’s museum and research library at the Crawford House.

The society’s annual Garden Tour is scheduled for Sunday, June 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The self-guided tour begins at the Crawford House and will feature private and community gardens throughout Newburgh and New Windsor. Organizers said the event showcases the region’s horticultural diversity, from formal historic landscapes and backyard gardens to urban farms and contemporary patio spaces.

Tickets are $25 when purchased online through June 6 and $30 at the door the day of the event.

The tour serves as one of the historical society’s major annual fundraisers and is part of a growing community gardening partnership with Archtober Newburgh and the Annual Garden Showcase.

Visitors can also attend a plant sale hosted by the Community Garden Club of Marlboro from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. before beginning the tour.

This year’s event is sponsored at the Rose level by Jonathan Hamilt and David Cvengros.

The society is also seeking additional sponsors for the 2026 tour, with sponsorship levels ranging from $150 to $1,000. Benefits include brand recognition, complimentary tickets and annual memberships.

Meanwhile, the Crawford House is hosting its 2026 featured exhibit exploring the life and work of Thomas B. Pope, a Newburgh artist whose paintings are part of the society’s permanent collection.

The exhibit includes Pope’s artwork alongside artifacts, documents and memorabilia illustrating his many roles in 19th-century Newburgh, including service as a firefighter, Civil War veteran, photographer, journalist and merchant.

The exhibit is partially funded through a grant from the Awesome Foundation Newburgh Chapter.

The Crawford House is open for tours every Sunday through December from 1 to 4 p.m. Suggested admission is $5, while historical society members are admitted free.

The society’s Helen Gearn Library is open for research Tuesdays through Thursdays from 2 to 6 p.m. Advance arrangements are requested for researchers.

More information on events, tickets and sponsorship opportunities is available through the society’s website or by calling 845-561-2585.
