GNSO presents ‘Late Idyll’

The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra will present “Late Idyll,” an evening of contrasting musical masterworks by Sibelius and Brahms, on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Aquinas Hall at Mount St. Mary College.

Under the direction of Music and Artistic Director Russell Ger, the program features Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto with guest soloist Christina Bouey, followed by Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 2.

Ger described the performance as a deeply personal and expressive pairing. “These works feel like the composers are having a private conversation with you,” he said. “They each have a kind of grand intimacy about them—seeming to both whisper as well as sing.”

Sibelius’ Violin Concerto—a haunting and electrifying work—reflects the composer’s early dreams of becoming a violinist. From its icy opening to its fiery, dance-like finale, the concerto is known for its emotional depth and technical brilliance. Bouey, a rising star in the classical world, will bring the piece to life with her virtuosic performance.

The concert will conclude with Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, often referred to as his “pastoral symphony.” The radiant composition combines warmth, lyrical beauty, and bursts of joyful energy, culminating in one of the most beloved finales in the orchestral repertoire.

General open seating is $60, senior tickets are $40, and admission is free for those under 18 and full-time college students under 25.

Tickets for “Late Idyll” and season subscriptions for the orchestra’s five-concert series are available at newburghsymphony.org.
