Goldback boys win first swim meet of the season

It was the first meet of the 2022-23 season and the Newburgh Free Academy boys’ swimming and diving team is off to a good start, winning a three-way meet against the Minisink Valley Warriors and Red Hook Raiders and qualifying eight swimmers for February’s Section 9 championship meet.

The Goldbacks won the meet with 529 total points. The Warriors were second and Raiders were third.

Jack Mummery (200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle), Vicente Velasquez (200-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle), Conor Mummery (200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle), Peyton Tuttle (200-yard individual medley, 100-yard backstroke), Jackson Cooper (200-yard individual medley, 100-yard breaststroke), Angelo Reade (50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle), Jackson Gerbes (50-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly) and Aiden Domanico (100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke) all qualified for sectionals in two events.

Angelo Reade had the best finish for the Goldbacks when he won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.99. Gerbes finished third.

Jack Mummery won the 500-yard freestyle, with Conor Mummery finishing 24 seconds behind him.

Velasquez, Gerbes, Reade and Jack Mummery led the 200-yard freestyle relay team to a victory in 1:39 with their second team of Jackson Cooper, Sebastian Burgarelli, Conor Mummery and Jax Pagano.

The Goldbacks opened the meet with second- and third-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay.

Mummery and Velasquez finished second and third respectively in the 200-yard freestyle, while Conor Mummery took fifth. Tuttle was second in the 200-yard individual medley, while Cooper and Pagano were third and fourth respectively.

Cole Mullarkey was second in diving with a six-dive score of 168.05. Akhiir McNeil and Ayden Ortega were fourth and fifth.

Gerbes and Domanico were second and third in the 100-yard butterfly with Sebastian Burgarelli coming in fourth. Velasquez and Reade were second and third in the 100-yard freestyle with Miles Davis coming in fifth.

Tuttle and Domanico were second and third in the 100-yard backstroke with Markus Constancio coming in fourth.

Cooper was second in the 100-yard breaststroke and Pagano and Burgarelli took third and fourth respectively.

Velasquez, Tuttle, Reade and Jack Mummery led the 400-yard freestyle relay to a second-place finish, while the Goldbacks’ second team took fourth.
