Goldback girls second in O’Neill tournament

The Newburgh Free Academy girls’ basketball team finished second at the James I. O’Neill tournament on Saturday after suffering a 57-48 loss to the Red Hook Raiders in the championship game at James I. O’Neill High School.

Tournament MVP Emily Kent scored a game-high 28 points and all-tournament team member Katie Boyd scored 11.

T.T. Burden was named to the all-tournament team for the Goldbacks, scoring a game-high 37 points.

The Goldbacks opened the tournament with a 44-43 win over the host James I. O’Neill Raiders on Thursday night.

T.T. Burden led the Goldbacks with a game-high 24 points. She hit two free throws in the final minute to give the Goldbacks a 42-41 lead. Amelia Turner extended the lead to three points with two free throws of her own.

James I. O’Neill’s Timeran Learey hit a late basket to pull the Raiders to within one, but time ran out with the ball in the Goldbacks’ possession.

Abbey Richardson led the Raiders with a team-high 13 points, and Learey and Bella Alberici each scored 10.

Red Hook opened the tournament with a win over the Cornwall Dragons.

The Goldbacks opened the week with a with a 71-39 loss to the Kingston Tigers on December 11 in their Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 opener.

Jasonli Frances-Torres scored 3 points and Diamond Banks scored 16 points. Victoria Fall added 13.

Burden led the Goldbacks with 22 points.
