Grant sought for body camera

Newburgh City Council approved the resolution for the city manager to apply and accept if granted a New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Body Worn Camera Program Grant in the amount of $38,000.

In the city police department, according to Police Commissioner José Gomérez, 46 body-worn cameras were already acquired from Axon Enterprise Inc. Axon Enterprise Inc had appeared before the city council several months ago and had presented their body camera technology to be added to the department. With the additional funds, if awarded to the city, Gomérez seeks to add an additional 19 cameras for the city police department. Additional cameras would be given to parking enforcement officers, city detectives and supervisors and be used during their course of their work in the department.

“Body worn cameras help our police officers when they’re going about their daily operations. It also helps the public and it builds trust,” said Councilman Anthony Grice. “It’s a win, win to me and so I definitely support it.”
