We’ve been bewildered by too many weeks of soggy gray days; however, there’s always a surprise in nature that lifts our spirits.  Tiny pearls of beauty, hummingbirds, have graced our flowers at the oddest of times, and it’s usually right after a fierce storm hits our area, and the sun briefly shines radiantly.  All that can be seen are gorgeous shimmering colors of shiny blue and green swiftly fluttering from our colorful zinnias, to bright pink phlox, and the most interesting sight being tiny birds fearlessly or territorially fighting the big bumble bees who own the long-stemmed purple flowers on the large-leafed hostas.  So delicate and sweet, they bring smiles reminding us that nature is a natural healer and a most appreciated gift.
         
Town of Newburgh Recreation Department, Chadwick Lake Park has wonderful nature programs for children of all ages, because time spent in nature inspires creativity in children as they use all their senses.  Connecting with nature is lots of fun and also has a calming effect on all of us, increasing our ability to concentrate, focus, and relax.

The teens at camp were offered some extra breathing space, perhaps by finding a tranquil spot to unwind, or leisurely exploring the magnificent Black Rock Forest.  This jewel in our own backyard led by well-informed counselors made adventures come alive, perhaps befriending safe animals and lovely new song birds and butterflies, and plants and flowers, and studying and following maps and safe paths, and a treasure trove just waiting to be discovered.
  
Camp Chadwick Lake campers visited Howe Caverns, the coolest underground cave in New York State, showcasing awesome limestone corridors and cavernous galleries making them almost look like a vast, richly ornamented cathedral.  Simply walking under massive boulders was quite intimidating, but safe.  With dim lighting and vivid colors their eyes were easily dazzled by glittering stone icicles, like a breathtaking aurora borealis spectacular.  Adding to the fun and learning adventure of the day was a cool boat ride.  Everyone had a delightful story to share.
