New Windsor approves 2023 spending plan

The average New Windsor taxpayer can expect an increase of approximately $50 per year, when the 2023 tax bill arrives in the mail in January.

The town board approved its 2023 town budget last week, following a brief public hearing that drew no public comment. The 2023 fiscal year will see a tax levy increase of 2.83% or $485,588 over the 2022 budget but will remain under the tax cap for another year. In 2023, the tax bill for an average single-family home in the town would increase by 2.520% or $53.87. For the preliminary budget, the overall budget is listed at $45.8 million with the proposed general fund amount at $23.11 million, the proposed highway fund amount is listed at $5.1 million, the water fund is $9.04 million and the sewer fund at $3.28 million.

“The largest part of your tax bill is your school tax,”warned Supervisor George Meyers. “Only about 15 percent of your total taxes is to the town.”

The 2023 Salaries for town elected officials are listed as follows: Town Supervisor, $134,000; Town Council Members, $18,900 each; Town Clerk, $93,300 and the Highway Superintendent, $85,300.

With the 2023 budget in place, town officials are already thinking ahead to the next one. The town board set a public hearing for December 7 to override the tax map. Meyers cautioned that while the town has no plans to do so, it needs to hold a public hearing in case that possibility should arise in the coming year.
