The Newburgh Free Library and UJIMA Literacy Program will host Celebrations and Traditions of Kwanzaa Thursday, December 28 from 1 - 3 p.m. representing UJIMA, the third principle of Kwanzaa, “Collective Work and Responsibility.” There will be a performance by students from Newburgh Performing Arts Academy, plus food and kids’ activities. The entire community is invited to attend and participate, there is no registration required. Last year’s event was attended by more than 140 participants to celebrate art, culture, history and storytelling through the work of African Americans.

This event will also highlight and celebrate the 2024 UJIMA Children’s Literacy Program, developed and presented by local entrepreneur and resident Malinda Ware in collaboration and partnership with the Newburgh Free Library with generous support from the Friends of the Library, private donations and other community organizations.

The UJIMA Program is a monthly reading program for youth ages 5-8 yrs old to encourage families to read and build their own personal libraries.
