The Newburgh Free Library on Wednesday, October 25, welcomed the City of Newburgh Fire Department to deliver a fire prevention and safety presentation for adults and community residents. In addition to the city fire department, the Orange County Department of Health and the American Red Cross of Eastern New York also made guest appearances with their own additional materials for public distribution. A presentation in English and in Spanish were offered for those interested.

Attendees of the session were able to learn how these organizations can help keep them safe at home. City of Newburgh fire department members discussed various types of fires and causes such as cooking, heating, electrical, smoking, candles, non-working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide.

Statistics associated with those fires and preventative measures on how to prepare or put out those fires were also discussed with the public. Plans on how to exit the house in case of a fire and how to operate a fire extinguisher were also taught as well in case of a future emergency. For immediate assistance in an emergency, please call the Newburgh Fire Department Emergency Line at (845) 562-1212.

Attendees also had the opportunity to sign-up for the Department of Health’s Healthy Neighborhoods Program in-home safety inspection or to have the Red Cross install free smoke detectors in their homes. There was also a drawing for home safety items.
