Newburgh sending five to state track championships

The Newburgh Free Academy track and field team will send one individual and a relay team to the state meet.

The boys’ 1,600-meter relay team of Brady Danyluk, Anthony Barrett, Quinston Leathers and David Pinnock won their race with a time of 3:20.56 on Friday’s Section 9 state qualifier at Faller Field in Middletown.

They will return to Faller Field on Friday for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet.

They will compete for the state Division I championship on Friday and if they qualify, they will compete for the combined championship on Saturday.

Anthony Burnett won the 400-meter hurdles in 55.68 seconds to punch his ticket. He nearly qualified in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.46 seconds.

He will compete on Saturday.

Denisha Cruz came closest to qualifying for the girls’ team when she finished third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.76.

She also was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.05 seconds.
