Newburgh’s Roth, Yan brothers at State meet

Newburgh Free Academy Freshman Josh Yan finished in a five-way tie for 24th place at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys’ golf championships on June 5 at Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira.

Yan shot an 86 on the tournament’s second day to finish 14 strokes above par with a score of 158. Yan, and the rest of the state qualifiers, battled windy conditions on the course on June 4 as he finished in a tie for 33rd place with Minisink Valley’s Chris Rickard at 10 over par with a round of 82.

His older brother, Mark Yan, shot an 80 on Day 2 to finish 23 over par with a total score of 167 to tie six ways for 58th. He performed better on the second day as he shot an 87 on the first day of the tournament to finish the first day tied for 75th.

Union-Endicott junior Dante Bertoni won the tournament on the first playoff hole with a win over Victor sophomore Brody Burgess. Bertoni finished with a two-day score of 146, two over par.

Overall, Section 9 finished 10th.

Girls’ Golf
Newburgh’s Regan Roth finished in a three-way tie for 58th place on June 5 at the NYSPHSAA girls’ golf championships at the Edison Club in Rexford.

Roth shot a 91 on the tournament’s second day, two strokes better than her Day 1 score of 93 for a total of 184. Roth was tied for 52nd after the first day of play.

Section 2’s Kennedy Swedick of Albany Academy for Girls won the overall individual championship with a two-day score of 139. Albany Academy won the overall team championship with a score of 641.

Section 9 finished sixth overall with a total score of 1,238. Section 1 was first among sections with a total score of 1,090.
