Newburgh Free Academy’s Allison Shapiro qualified for the Section 9 tournament by reaching the quarterfinals in the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association girls’ tennis tournament on Wednesday at Match Point Tennis Center in Goshen.

The Goldbacks also qualified the doubles team of Jade Garay and Gaelen Pollick for sectionals by reaching the quarterfinals.

Shapiro, the tournament’s No. 6 seed, was eliminated from the tournament when she was shut out, 6-0, 6-0 by No. 3 Alexandra Krasinska of Warwick. She won her opening-round match, 6-4, 6-1 over James I. O’Neill’s Haley Peck.

Newburgh’s other singles entry, Cara Kerin, was eliminated in the first round by Kingston’s Elizabeth Madonna, 6-1, 6-4.

Garay and Pollick opened the tournament with a 4-6, 7-6(3) win over Minisink Valley’s Holly Kulynych and Caitlyn Higby. They followed that with a 6-2-win over Pine Bush’s Sabrina Steixner and Nikki Ahmataj, 6-2, 6-1.

Shapiro and Garay played doubles in last year’s postseason, finishing fourth in the section.

The doubles team of Zara Tranqueda and Vivienne Bucci opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Port Jervis’ Reina Hebecke and Caroline Centauro. They were eliminated by a 6-1-6-0 loss to the tournament’s top seeded Cornwall team of Mia Pagano and Noemi Krizso.

The sectional tournament was scheduled to start Tuesday at Match Point.
