Police officer remains suspended

A little over a month has passed since the arrest of Marquis Freeman by City of Newburgh Police Officers, resulting in an excessive arrest caught on film and residents speaking out at a city council meeting. The officer in question remains suspended pending the outcome of the investigations into the matter.

The arrest of Freeman took place on the evening of Wednesday, August 7. A video captured officers arresting him while on the ground and during his arrest, an officer is seen repeatedly punching him several times. Audio from the video captures the sound of a taser being used on Freeman.

The public came out to the city council meeting on September 9 to voice their concerns over the video, calling for justice for Freeman. Several comments were made demanding the officer be terminated. Freeman is the cousin of Coach Harold Rayford, a local community figure and leader who requested accountability and that the proper procedures were followed in this matter.

The City of Newburgh Press Office provided a statement in which the city cannot comment on its ongoing investigation. Further questions and clarifications can be addressed to the New York State Office of the Attorney General. The press office of the Attorney General did not have any updates at this time.
