The Newburgh Board of Education received an update on the district’s capital project Tuesday, June 11 from CSArch Chief Executive Officer Rich Peckham and Ben Alling of Jacobs Project Managers Co.

Projects involved include the career and technical education (CTE) building, high school locker room renovations at the high school and Heritage Middle School.

The CTE schedule presented Tuesday night showed that the project was submitted to the New York State Education Department on January 31, 2024 with a revised project estimate conducted in early March.

A face to face review with the state was conducted in early March followed by state approval in April.

Public bidding began in April and bids were due back on Thursday, June 20. The award of contracts, which would be subject to board approval, is requested to be done at the July 2 board meeting.

The start of construction is anticipated to begin this summer in July and would be completed by July 31, 2026. The district would then have the opportunity to move into the building and prepare for students in August and then begin classes in September. The area where the CTE has been planned for was cleared out over a year ago and in that time, vegetation has started to grow back.

Discussing the Heritage Middle School Site Circulation Project, construction has commenced and the goal is to have the project complete by August 30, 2024. The scope of the project involves new asphalt at the main entry off Union Avenue, new vehicle staging lanes for plus or minus 37 cars, milling/repaving of the entry road, a new 10’ concrete sidewalk for loading and unloading, a repaved bus loop, 28 additional parking stalls and a new access drive from Union Avenue further down the road.

The locker room schedule showed that the project was submitted to the state in mid-January and is anticipated to be approved by July. Anticipated public bids would be sent out in September and then contracts would be awarded by mid-October. The construction would then be anticipated to begin November 1 with a completion date of August 1, 2025.

Discussing concrete replacement at Newburgh Free Academy, contracts were awarded last year and the project was projected to be completed by September 2023. However, there were delays in received materials according to the presenter. The anticipated time of delivery for those materials is early July 2024 which would lead to a completion by the end of the month. The project would close out by August.
