The Shape of Trees

Educational Walk along the Rosendale Trestle

Posted

The Wallkill Valley Land Trust welcomes you to join a walk all about The Shape of Trees with Dr. William Schuster, Saturday February 24th, 11am - 12:30pm. The Shape of Trees will be an educational walk on the Rosendale Trestle area of the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail. Participants will learn about identifying local trees in winter, when their architecture and other identifying features are more evident than after trees leaf out. The walk will especially examine tree shapes and discuss the interplay of factors including genetics, site conditions, and historical events that underlie why trees have the shapes that they do. The Rosendale Trestle provides an excellent opportunity to view tree architecture from within and above the forest canopy.

This walk will be led by Dr. William (Bill) Schuster, a lifelong forest ecologist and author of many research publications on trees and forests. Bill recently moved to New Paltz after a 30-year tenure as Executive Director of Black Rock Forest in Cornwall NY and now serves on the Board of the Wallkill Valley Land Trust.
