Highland Library hosts Author talk
Spies! Loyalists! Tories! Conspiracy! Strange messages? Codes in invisible ink?

The Highland Public Library welcomes author A.J. Schenkman on Monday, March 14 at 6 p.m., author of Patriots and Spies in Revolutionary New York and Unexpected Bravery: Women and Children of the Civil War.
The American Revolution was first and foremost a civil war that tore at the very fabric of families as well as society. Patriots were determined to separate from England; while Loyalists were just as determined to defeat what they saw as a rebellion. Many do not know that during several critical periods the war was almost fatally undermined by English sympathizers or in some cases opportunistic Patriots. Patriots and Spies in Revolutionary New York is a compilation of twelve stories regarding important moments in New York State’s history during the American Revolution.
The American Civil War divided the United States from 1861- 1865. During those years, over two million soldiers served in both the Union and Confederate Armies. What is little known is that not only the numerous children, some as young as 12, enlisted on both sides, but also women who disguised themselves as men in an attempt to make a difference in the epic struggle to determine the future of the United States of America.
A.J. Schenkman is the author of several books about local and regional history. He has written for many magazines, blogs, and academic journals including numerous articles on Hudson Valley history. He is a teacher in Wallkill.
His talk will take place on Monday, March 14 at the Highland Public Library, 6-7 p.m. Registration is required.

Highland Rotary collecting clothing
Highland Rotary Club has TWO clothing collection sites.
These sheds are a win-win-win for everyone said Highland Rotary Club president David Lambert. Our Rotary is able to raise some funds to help with the any community based initiatives we support, our partners earn a little extra funding for their operations and the community has a reputable place to donate their usable items and they know they are supporting organizations that give back to the local community.
Rotarians volunteer to monitor the shed weekly to ensure that donations are cared for and the sites are kept tidy. They will accept usable sneakers, shoes, clothing, belts, purses, linens, blankets, curtains and stuffed animals. Items not accepted are Furniture, electronics, household items, books, toys, garbage, pillows, rags and fabric scraps.

Two locations are 84 Grand Street (American Legion Post 0193) as well as 75 Haviland Road (Hudson Valley Rail Trail) Parking Lot.
For more information about the Highland Rotary Clothing Collection initiative, or the Rotary Club contact David Lambert@morganstanley.com.
