Lady Dukes honor lone senior with a win

Hannah Polumbo has seen a lot of Senior Nights, and Friday night was her turn.

The Marlboro Dukes honored Polumbo, their only senior, before their 60-42 non-league win over the Highland Huskies at Marlboro High School.

“It’s kind of surreal because I feel like I’ve watched everybody else’s Senior Night, and then it’s finally my turn,” Polumbo said. “It’s kind of weird to think I’m not the eighth grader anymore, so it kind of doesn’t feel real, but it is.”

Polumbo has been a key part of the Dukes’ team since she joined the varsity team as an eighth grader on the 2019-20 team that won its second straight Section 9 Class B championship.

Her first season was the last before the COVID-19 pandemic, which cost her most of her freshman season before full play resumed during her sophomore year. Earlier on Friday, she texted former teammates Erin and Lizzy Lofaro questioning whether it really was her turn to be the senior.

“They were like, ‘Yeah, it is,’” Polumbo said. “Sometimes I do feel like the (eighth grader) but now I’m the oldest, so it’s kind of weird.”

So far, the senior season has been a memorable one as the Dukes have won the Mid Hudson Athletic League Division II championship and were scheduled to play Our Lady of Lourdes in Monday’s semifinal at Marlboro High School.

A win on Monday would put them in Wednesday’s championship game at Dutchess County Community College.

“It’s really special because it’s my last season, but I feel, as a group, we’re really close,” Polumbo said. “I feel like they’re a great group of girls, and I wouldn’t want to be on any other team as a senior.”

Friday was their last regularly scheduled home game, and she finished it in style, with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

“Hannah is the backbone, right now, of the program,” Marlboro coach Matt Murphy said.

“She’s been here forever. She’s a sectional champion as an eighth grader, and she’s led this program the last five years. She’s obviously irreplaceable and it’s going to feel weird without her.”

Teammate Gabby Murphy scored 19 points and Lily Sullivan added 15 as the Dukes finished the game by winning six of their last seven. They followed their Feb. 9 loss to the Red Hook Raiders with a 54-28 win over the Rondout Valley Ganders on Wednesday and Friday’s win over the Huskies.

“I feel really good,” Polumbo said. “We work really well together, and when we play together, we are a very hard-working team. We will come to practice, and we will work our butts off to make sure that we are better. I’ve got a really good feeling about us.”

Grace Koehler led the Huskies with a game-high 22 points. The Huskies, MHAL Division III champions, were scheduled to visit the Division IV champion Millbrook Blazers on Monday in the MHAL semifinals. A win on Monday would put them up against the winner of the game between the Dukes and Lourdes.

The Huskies visited the Blazers on Wednesday, suffering a 54-44 loss. They opened the week with a 68-29 win over the Spackenkill Spartans.

“We’re going to devise some plans this weekend over our practice to defensively try to step it and clean themselves up on offense,” Highland coach Michael Geller said. “What ever happens, we look forward to the opportunity to play them in the semis and we’re pretty excited we’re back-to-back Division III champs, as well.”
