Recently, the Marlboro-Milton Lions Club awarded two, $2,500 scholarships to graduating seniors Novali Hanley and Katerina Calderone at a special dinner that was held at the Ship Lantern Inn. Each was asked to give a short speech.
Calderone thanked the club for the scholarship.
“It really means a lot to help me further my educational goals and my future career,” she said. “I plan to major in Elementary Education at Mount St. Mary College and hope to earn a dual certification in elementary education and 7th through 9th grade and a concentration in history.”
Hanley also thanked the Lions Club, adding that, “I am going to be majoring in Business at Ulster Community College.”
President Steve Ludwigson said Lions Clubs are the most active of service organizations, with 1.4 million men and women in 48,000 clubs around the world. The local chapter was founded in 1947 and provides, not only the student scholarships, but sets up holiday lighting in town, makes available sight and diabetes testing and offers assistance to families in need in the community.
The Lions Club recognized members Steve Jennison and Fred Callo, who Ludwigson said, go ‘over and above’ for the community.
Joseph Miceli was sworn in a the club’s newest member. He has lived in Marlborough since 1991 and is currently a police captain with the Department of Environmental Protection, charged with monitoring the local reservoirs that provide water to the City of New York. He said he chose to join because, “I felt it was time to give back to the town that I love and the town that I’m invested in. I’m at a point in my career and in my life where I think it’s time to give back to the community that’s provided for me.”
