Lloyd PBA hosts youth fishing tournament

Recently, the Lloyd Police Benevolent Association hosted a free Youth Fishing Tournament at the pond at Berean Park.

Chief James Janso came with his wife and two children.

“They put this together to thank the community for all the support they’ve given us,” he said.

Many community organizations came to help; the Highland Rotary, the Scouts of Troop 70, the Lloyd Rod and Gun Club and Brennie’s Pizzeria. Additional donations came from Troy’s Auto, Premier Auto Body, Atlantic Concrete, Barone Construction Group, Brooks & Brooks, Sal’s Bar & Grill, Wendy Rosinski, Zambito Construction, Mid Hudson Sporting Clays, Wallkill Valley Federal Savings & Loan Bank and On the Roll Deli.

Janso said the pond was stocked with about 360 trout prior to the event, “and they’re still here. We’re pulling some out with some good catches but there are plenty left in there. It’s a great community event and I’m proud of the guys [officers] for doing it. It’s good to see all the kids out and not sitting home on computers, tablets or social media. This is back to the old way of having fun with the family.”

Officer Chris Miller, as PBA President, oversaw this first-time event. He said in the future he may dub the tournament as ‘Cops and Bobbers,’ as a tip of the hat to fishing. He said about 150 kids participated.
Miller said the fish were purchased and brought down from a hatchery in Sullivan County and a special one is named the ‘Golden Trout’. In addition, 50 prizes were given out during the event.

“We just wanted to do something for the kids and get the community together and have a good time fishing,” he said. “I want to thank everybody for coming out and thank the business owners in town for contributing as it makes a big difference.”

Miller said the young winners of the tournament were divided into three age groups with the largest fish and the most fish caught in each group. Those who took home prizes or a trophy were Logan Nadeau, Jack Schaeffer, Hudson Zanck, Cameron Peters, Nathan Anderson, Izabella Pelletieri, Danica Acampora, Audrey Summerson, James Murray, Colden Rizzo, Nadia Metz and Paige Peters.

Miller said the PBA is considering hosting a Veterans brunch down by the Hudson River later this year and perhaps another car show as a fundraiser, with the proceeds helping to pay for more free community events.
