The Marlboro School District recognized the Scholastic Student Art Awards at last week’s school board meeting.

Superintendent Michael Rydell began by pointing out that, “in our relatively small school district we have incredible art teachers who give so much of themselves and their time to bring the joy of art but also to impart the skills necessary to be truly student artists.”

Rydell said they had many submissions to the awards program.

“It was just so inspiring and I am so proud as the Superintendent to go to the awards ceremony and see our students being recognized and then to be inspired by their art because I am arguably the least person with art skills,” he said.

Rydell noted that nine Marlboro students were recognized at the Gold Level for 12 art pieces; five students were recognized at the Silver level and 21 students received Honorable Mention for 37 pieces of art.

Rydell singled out Sophia Montalbano for also winning the American Visions Award; she was one of only five students to be so honored.

“We’re so proud of you Sophia,” he said.

Amy Tremblay said an Awards ceremony for these young artists was held recently in the Fine Arts Building at SUNY New Paltz.

Gold Key Winners: Gabriella Aponte, Connor Baxter, Gwyneth Benninger, Daniel Conrad, Molly Daly, Sophia Montalbano, Victoria Sanchez, Rajah Singh and Amaney Sirdah. These artists will be entered into a National Award competition, which will be held in June at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Silver Key Winners: Connor Baxter, Gwyneth Benninger, Molly Daly, Jorja Kavanaugh, Sarah Masterson, Eamon Menkins, Chyanne Negron, Olivia Price, Lily Sullivan, Emily Tarsio and Evan Wheatley.
