Marlboro honors Students of the Month

Last week the Marlboro School Board and the Administration honored their Students of the Month for September.

Fifth grader Claire Neligan was named the Marlboro Elementary School Student of the Month. Choral and General Music Instructor Susan Johnston said Claire “is a role model and student leader, a caring friend and a hard-working musician. In General Music she demonstrates her ability to work with others, share instruments and follow directions. She is an active participant in all of our activities from folk dances, drumming, piano and more.”

Johnston pointed out that when Claire faces something new and challenging, “she has the ability to dig into the new material and face it head on...I am truly impressed and proud of the consistent time and effort Claire has made. I can’t wait to see where she’ll go because in music she is a dedicated Duke.”

Zach Povall said Claire plays the clarinet in his band and described her as a “leader, a musician, a teacher, a friend and is always respectful to herself, the people around her and the instruments in the room.”

Povall is looking forward to “another amazing year and congratulations.”

Amelia Kovaci was named the Marlboro Middle School Student of the Month for September. Dr. Hu-Corbett said Amelia has been in her music program since the sixth grade.

Last year Amelia auditioned and joined the select chorus and also serves as their Treasurer.

“As an alto I can always count on her to sing the right part and to lead the group,” Dr. Hu-Corbett said. “She always challenged herself and picked difficult music to learn. In each class that I have taught Amelia, she has been a hard working, kind and exemplar student...but is humble and kind as well. In our spring concert she had a solo and has a beautiful voice to match her gentle personality. She is always responsible and she is a wonderful student. She is truly one of a kind and I am so proud of her; congratulations.”

Dr. Andrew Mayce has had Amelia in his band program since the sixth grade.

“When I met her she was one of those students who quietly does the right thing and doesn’t try to stick out too much” he said. “Over the past two years she’s become more of a leader in the clarinet section, is always enthusiastic and ready to work. I am very proud of you, Amelia, congratulations.”

Antonio Youmans is the Marlboro High School Student of the Month for September. Social Worker Meghan Vigeant began by saying that, “Antonio is the kind of kid who is always doing what he is supposed to do. He looks for ways to continually improve, build on his successes and shows up every day putting his best effort forward.”

Vigeant went on to add that Antonio, “is thoughtful, caring and extremely helpful. He has helped with many school service projects, offering his own time to better the experience for his peers. I’ve seen Antonio advocate for others and be an up-stander and not a bystander.”

Vigeant said, “Antonio, I hope you leave here tonight knowing how proud everyone at the Marlboro High School is of you; keep being you.”

English as a New Language [ENL] teacher Rachel Sear said, “Antonio is a young man who I have seen grow and mature and keep all the wonderful things about himself but also become thoughtful, caring, motivated and just wise.”

Board of Education President Frank Milazzo had the last word.

“On behalf of the school board, I want to congratulate all of the honorees tonight. It just goes to show the talent and the caring people that we have in this district. Congratulations to all three of you.”
