Marlboro Elementary School students put down their pencils and notebooks on February 7 to participate in Global School Play Day! Started by a group of educators in 2015, the special day is designed to encourage schools to allow students ample time for free play without the use of screens, structured games, or adult direction. The idea is to let children explore their creativity, problem-solving skills, and social interactions in an unstructured and spontaneous environment. As the young Dukes clearly proved, games +friends = Fun!

Mark your calendars! The Marlboro High School (MHS) Drama Club will be presenting Tina Fey’s “Mean Girls: High School Version” in the MHS auditorium at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 14; Friday, March 15; and Saturday, March 16. There will also be a matinee performance on March 16 at 2 p.m. Please note that the show is rated PG-13 and is suggested for ages 13 and up.

Tickets cost $12 for adults, $8 for children, and $10 for students and senior citizens. They will be available to purchase at the door, or you can secure your spot in advance by purchasing online at bit.ly/3w3gMXG

February is #BlackHistoryMonth and luckily for students at Marlboro Elementary School, the Library Media Center is full of books designed to educate young readers about the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout our history.

Classes have been exploring books written by African American authors, as well as learning about the contributions of various African Americans on the culture and achievements of our country. Among the students’ favorites is “Love is Loud,” which is illustrated by award-winning children’s book author and illustrator Bryan Collier—who also happens to be a proud Marlboro resident and parent!

2024 March Madness Book Tournament for Adults at the Marlboro Library
The Marlboro Library has chosen 64 titles from their collection that had the highest circulation numbers in 2023. For 6 weeks, you will have the opportunity to vote for the books you think are most deserving of the title March Madness Champion.

Starting March 5, visit the Marlboro Library’s Instagram or Facebook page to cast your votes and decide which titles advance to the next round. Winners will be posted each Monday on our social media pages and website. Tune in and vote just for fun or make it competitive by filling out a Prediction Bracket! Prediction Brackets can be picked up at the library or downloaded at marlborolibrary.org. The person who most correctly predicts the bracket outcome will win a prize! Return your prediction bracket by Sunday March 3rd to the Library.

Weekly Recipe
Mother’s Ham Casserole

Ingredients
2 cups cubed peeled potatoes
1 large carrot, sliced
2 celery ribs, chopped
3 cups water
2 cups cubed fully cooked ham
2 tablespoons chopped green pepper
2 teaspoons finely chopped onion
7 tablespoons butter, divided
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1-1/2 cups 2% milk
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup soft bread crumbs
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 375°. In a saucepan, bring the potatoes, carrot, celery and water to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and cook until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain.
2. In a large skillet, sauté ham, green pepper and onion in 3 tablespoons butter until tender. Add the potato mixture. Transfer to a greased 1-1/2-qt. baking dish.
3. In a large saucepan, melt the remaining 4 tablespoons butter; stir in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in the milk, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Reduce heat; add cheddar cheese and stir until melted.
4. Pour over ham mixture. Sprinkle with bread crumbs. Bake until heated through, 25-30 minutes.
