Spaghetti dinner supports local youth battling rare cancer

Highland Rotary Club, in partnership with the Highland High School Interact Club, hosted a sold-out Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser on Sunday, April 24 to help support Zach Osterhoudt, a 15-year-old Highland High School student who was recently diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

More than 20 students from the Interact Club pitched in alongside the Rotarians to make the event a success, with 225 dinners sold, and additional donations collected by generous guests. In total, more than $3500 was raised to support the Osterhoudt family.

The American Legion, located on Grand Street in Highland, graciously donated the space for the event. Sals Place in Highland generously provided the meals at a tremendously discounted price and Minard Farms Beverage Company donated drinks.

“This was a true community effort with volunteers of all ages coming out to support the Osterhoudt family,” said Highland Rotary Club president David Lambert. “It is times like this that we are reminded how lucky we are to live in a community like Highland, and also where we can see the power of a strong local Rotary Club to make an immediate difference to those in need.”

Highland Rotary meets each Wednesday morning at 7:10 a.m. at the Gateway Diner on Route 9W in Highland. Comprised of just shy of 50 active members, the club is one of the leading service organizations in the community, serving as a positive resource for the local community, as well as providing humanitarian support internationally.

“As a service leader in the community, we make a difference in the lives of many people during their time of need and work to foster our service ethics with our youth,” adds Lambert.
