Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that on Monday, December 20, Jamaad Murphy, age 28, of Wallkill, was sentenced in connection with his conviction for Murder in the Second Degree, arising from his having fatally shot a man outside of a Town of Wallkill nightclub. Murphy had previously pled guilty before Orange County Court Judge William L. DeProspo, and the court sentenced Murphy to an indeterminate prison term of 20 years to life.

When he pled guilty, Murphy admitted that on November 3, 2019, at approximately 2:15 a.m., he fatally shot a man outside of the Made in Puerto Rico Latin Cuisine and Sports Bar, located at 505 Schutt Road Extension, in the Town of Wallkill. Following the crime, Murphy was the subject of a fourteen-month multi-state manhunt, before he was arrested in Rockland County in January 2021.

District Attorney Hoovler thanked the New York State Police for their assistance in the investigation and prosecution of the case; as well as all the state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies, from several states, who aided in the search and eventual apprehension of Murphy.

“There is no crime more serious than the intentional taking of a human life,” said District Attorney Hoovler, “and those who commit crimes like that in Orange County can be sure that we pull out all the stops to bring them to justice. This defendant tried to flee from his crime, but the efforts of numerous law enforcement agencies paid off in his apprehension. Now he will receive some measure of the punishment that he deserves, and the family, friends, and loved ones of his victim will have some degree of closure.”

The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Ryan Greenbaum and Assistant District Attorney Nicholas Mangold.
