A 28-year-old Bronx man was arrested after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop, resisting arrest and injuring a Newburgh police officer, authorities said.
Police said Sgt. Mountain attempted to stop a red Dodge at about 1:11 a.m. Sept. 29 on South William Street because the vehicle’s driver-side brake light was out.
According to police, the driver made a U-turn, struck the side-view mirror of the sergeant’s marked patrol vehicle and fled. The vehicle stopped near 175 South William St., where the driver, identified as Omar Overstreet, allegedly fled on foot.
Officer J. Rivera caught Overstreet, who police said resisted arrest. Rivera suffered a knee injury during the arrest.
Police said Overstreet repeatedly kicked and damaged an interior door panel of a patrol vehicle while being transported to the Newburgh Police Department. At the station, he allegedly continued to struggle with officers and attempted to spit at and bite them.
Overstreet was charged with assault in the second degree, criminal mischief in the third degree, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration in the second degree and vehicle and traffic violations.
The vehicle’s passenger, Amy Wase, 46, of Middletown, was found to have an active bench warrant issued by the Town of Poughkeepsie.
