Americas have always had the freedom to make a choice, whether it be in their selection of religion, where they live, the foods, beverages, clothing or elected official they select.

In December 2021 President Joe Biden signed an executive order to end purchases of gas-powered vehicles by 2035. For many Americans who prefer their current gasoline or diesel-powered motor vehicle and had planned on replacing it with a similar model in the future, the President’s order came as a shock. Their freedom of choice, which is the motivator of our capitalist system, was being taken away without our elected representatives in Congress passing legislation.

Last month, a group of nearly 4,000 auto dealers sent a letter to President Biden urging his administration to slow proposed regulations that would require that two-thirds of new vehicles sold in the U.S. be electric by 2032. They stated “electric vehicle demand today is not keeping up with the large influx of BEVs arriving at our dealerships prompted by the current regulations”.

Some of our elected representatives in Washington are listening. On September 14, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1435, the Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act. All Republicans and 8 Democrats voted for this bill. Unfortunately, our local Representative Pat Ryan noted NAE. The bill was received in Senate on September 18, over two months ago. Apparently, Majority Leader Schumer doesn’t want to bring this bill to the Senate floor and force all the Senators to show the American electorate where their Senators stand. Next November, one-third of the Senators are up for election. Maybe that’s the reason Senator Schumer is sitting on the bill?

As President Biden would say, “come on, man”!
