The Town of Cornwall has spent $42,600 to ensure that both Munger Cottage and the offices of both the town clerk and Building Department stay cool the rest of this hot summer.

The board took the action on July 9, awarding contracts to Petro Plumbing & Heating in New Windsor for the ductless air conditioning units to be installed as soon as possible. Earlier in the month the Recreation Department had to cancel some senior citizen activities in Munger Cottage because, Highway Superintendent Tom Gschwind said, they couldn’t get the temperature in the building below 84 degrees.

Gschwind said the units being replaced are 23 and 12 years old. He also warned the board that the air conditioning in the assessor’s and supervisor’s offices will likely need to be replaced in the near future too.

In other matters from the board meeting that evening:

--The board okayed the West Point-Highland Falls Rotary Club’s use of some local roads for its 13th annual Storm King Run on Sunday, Aug. 25. As well, they approved the popular Cornwall Youth Committee’s Color Run for Saturday, Oct. 5.

-- Dr. Amy Richmond was named to the Planning Board, for a term ending Dec. 31, 2026.

-- The resignation of part-time police officer Nicholas Vazios was accepted.

-- With “great appreciation” a mural for the Town Hall bandstand was accepted from local artist Terry Murray. “It captures the spirit of Cornwall,” Councilwoman Virginia Scott said.

-- From The Dark Room on Main St., Jim Ferrara was on hand to talk with the board about his request to have an off-street parking requirement removed from his special use permit. Ferrara was asked to come back in August to make a presentation about the matter, and then a public hearing will be planned for September.
