District 19 Little League Tournament underway

The District 19 Little League tournament is under way with the defending champion Town of Newburgh-New Windsor seniors getting off to a strong start with a 22-0 win over Warwick on Saturday to open the tournament.

The Hudson Valley Hustle, based in New Windsor lost three games in the 11U division of the Greater Hudson Valley Baseball League, while Newburgh Red Storm teams across all age groups got off to a slow start last week.

Town of Newburgh-New Windsor 22, Warwick 0
Town of Newburgh-New Windsor put the game away early, scoring 14 runs in the first inning in a route of Warwick on Saturday in Port Jervis.

J.P. Walsh singled and doubled and scored three runs. Justin Ramirez singled, doubled and scored two runs.

Pine Bush Rebels 8, Hudson Valley Hustle 6
Pine Bush Rebels 18, Hudson Valley Hustle 3
The Hudson Valley Hustle opened their summer season with a double-header sweep to the Pine Bush Rebels on the road on June 11.

Pine Bush won the first game by scoring eight runs in the first three innings, and then holding off the Hustle, who scored three runs in the sixth to close the gap to two runs.

The Rebels White rode a 13-run fifth inning to a rout of the Hustle in the second game.

Hudson Valley took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, a lead they held until Pine Bush scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Mid Hudson Tigers 14, Hudson Valley Hustle 3
The Mid Hudson Tigers scored in every inning on their way to a win over the Hudson Valley Hustle at Kristi Babcock Memorial Park in New Windsor.

The Hustle scored three runs in the third inning.

Heat 9, Newburgh Red Storm 8
Heat 11, Newburgh Red Storm 1
The Heat took control early in the first game, scoring all nine of their runs in the first three innings before the Red Storm exploded for five runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to pull to within one run.

Jonathan Zappolo had three hits, including a double, with an RBI to lead the Red Storm offensively. Ben Gould had two hits, including a triple and two RBIs. Jon VanVlak had a double and two RBIs.

The Heat dominated the second game, only allowing the Red Storm to score a single run in the third inning.

Kent White Sox 8, Newburgh Red Storm 5

The Newburgh Red Storm opened their season with a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Kent White Sox on June 11.

Heat 6, Newburgh Red Storm 4
The Newburgh Red Storm’s comeback from a 6-run deficit fell short on June 11 in a road loss to the Heat. Mike Esposito, Jr., Adrian Guerrero and Armani Capella each drove in runs for the Red Storm.

Marlboro Expos 8, Newburgh Red Storm 3

The Red Storm fell behind three runs early on June 12 and the Marlboro Expos added three more runs on their way to victory at Marlboro High School.

Michael Edge had a hit and an RBI for the Red Storm. Brandon Mabey also singled home a run.

Aidan Hartwell had two hits and four RBIs for the Expos.

AYYA Honey Badgers 11, Newburgh Red Storm 6
The Newburgh Red Storm continued to struggle on Saturday suffering a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the AYYA Honey Badgers.

Mike Esposito Jr. had three hits, three runs scored and three RBI in the first game. Derek Vlietstra had a hit and three RBIs.

Michael Edge had a hit and two RBIs in the second game.

High School

Mahopac Indians 14, Newburgh Red Storm 1
The Mahopac Indians used a six-run first inning and a seven-run third inning to rout the Red Storm on June 11. A.J. Grant drove in the Red Storm’s lone run in the fourth inning.

Wallkill Panthers 9, Newburgh Red Storm 7
Wallkill Panthers 8, Newburgh Red Storm 5
The Newburgh Red Storm was swept in a doubleheader on Saturday at Delano-Hitch Stadium despite taking a4-0 lead in the first game. Wallkill closed to within a run in the second and then took the lead with four runs in the fourth.

Nick Shala drove in a run for the Red Storm.

The Red Storm scored all five of their second-game runs in the first two innings, taking an early 4-0 lead, but Wallkill scored in every inning but the fourth to pull away for an 8-5 win.

A.J. Grant had two hits and an RBI for the Red Storm, while Jackson Mitterbauer singled and drove in a run.

Softball
Major All Stars

The Newburgh-New Windsor Major softball team went 0-2 and was quickly eliminated from the District 19 tournament last week.

They opened the tournament with a 10-0 loss to Cornwall on June 12, which sent them to the elimination bracket.

They were promptly eliminated the next day by a 13-5 loss to Monroe-Woodbury.
