Goldbacks eliminated by Valley Central

The Newburgh Free Academy baseball team scored two runs in the seventh inning to tie the game, but Valley Central’s Colin Quinn doubled in the winning run, as the fourth-seeded Valley Central Vikings walked off the No. 5 Goldbacks on May 22 at Valley Central High School in Montgomery.

The Goldbacks entered the seventh inning trailing the Vikings by two runs when J.J. McCoy’s two out double chased home Christopher Leggett and Tyler Martin with the tying runs.

That brought up Joe Ponesse, who was struck out by Valley Central’s Jason Murphy, who fanned six in seven innings to send the game to the bottom of the seventh inning.

Valley Central’s Will Quinn led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a base hit and then took second on a sacrifice by Trevor Mitchetti. John Wentink grounded out and after an intentional walk to Danny Bello, Colin Quinn ended the game – and the Goldbacks’ season – with a double to left field.

The Vikings got their first run in the fourth when Bryan Merritt hit Colin Quinn with a pitch with the bases load, and the Goldbacks got the run right back in the fifth on Martin’s RBI groundout.

The Vikings took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Murphy and a run scored by Colin Quinn.

The Goldbacks finished the season with a 12-9 record.
