Goldbacks fall to Wizards, 16-10

The Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks put up double-digit goals for the first time this season.

It didn’t, however, translate into a victory, as the Washingtonville Wizards scored six goals in the first quarter and handed the Goldbacks a 16-10 loss on April 2 in a non-league boys’ lacrosse game on a rainy Tuesday at Academy Field in Newburgh.

The Wizards piled up goals early in the first quarter as Andrew Heins and Tyler Mackay helped them build a 3-0 lead before Cole Mullarkey got the Goldbacks on the board with a goal with 6:43 left in the first quarter.

However, the Wizards answered with three more scores from Heins, Luke Lombardi and Nicholas Ascenzo to take a 6-1 lead after the first quarter.

The Wizards’ Sean Creeden opened the second quarter with a goal, but the Goldbacks scored three straight goals to close within three goals, 7-4, with 1:39 left in the second quarter.

Newburgh’s Hiro Muraoka got things started when he bounced a shot off the Washingtonville goalkeeper and then redirected his rebounded shot into the back of the cage with 6:55 left in the second quarter.

Then, Niko Bucholz made a spin move as he ran through the Wizards’ defense and cut the lead to four goals with 4:40 left in the quarter. Then, after the Goldbacks failed to convert on a man-up situation, Newburgh’s Ryan Wicker took a pass from Tyler Nichols for Newburgh’s fourth goal of the game.

However, their momentum stopped with 25.4 seconds left in the second quarter on a goal by Creeden, sending the Goldbacks into halftime trailing by four goals.

However, the Goldbacks never got closer than that as the Wizards got off to a fast start in the third quarter with five straight goals. Heins got things started with a goal, assisted by Ascenzo.

Another goal by Heins, another from Lombardi and two more from Ascenzo gave the Wizards a 13-4 lead with 3:25 remaining in the third quarter.

Two quick goals by the Goldbacks in the final minute cut the Wizards’ lead to six points at the end of the third quarter. Muraoka scored with 39.6 seconds left in the third quarter and Bucholz scored with 12.8 to go to cut the Washingtonville lead to 13-7.

The Goldbacks were scheduled to finish the week on Friday with a non-league road game against the Goshen Gladiators.
