Goldbacks hope to carry winter momentum into spring

With their recent indoor success, the Newburgh Free Academy boys’ track and field team will be entering the spring season with momentum, as they were recently crowned indoor champions in the 1,600-meter relay and then won a national championship in the sprint medley relay at Nike Indoor Nationals.

Now they’ll see how that translates onto the track in the spring.

Newburgh boys’ coach Malcolm Burks will welcome back all of his champion runners in Jun Rivas, Brady Danyluk, Anthony Burnett, Anthony Barnett, Devin Batelic, Nakei Johnson and David Pinnock.

Younger runners will include Renaldo Lee, Devon Pinto and DeJuan McKenzie.

The Goldbacks will have some big meets coming up as they plan to compete at the Penn Relays before moving on to the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association championship meet and the Section 9 championships, before seeing who qualifies for states and nationals.

The girls’ team, meanwhile, enters this season with nine seniors on what coach Kathi Workman said is a “young, hardworking squad” through which they’re hoping to build a successful season.

The Goldbacks have lost some key runners from last year’s team: Denisha Cru, Isabella Delgado, Lauren White, Riley Geis, Norah Scruggs, Inez O’Shea, Jada Moody, Olivia Hall and Delannia Gabriel.

However, they will return some key runners in Alyssa Worrell, Gabrielle Robles, Jaslene Cheatham, Crystal Beauford, Alexandra Swink, Mary Jane Politi and Natalia Sweat. Isabella Blanco, Marilyn Oppenheimer, and Amaya Caban are joining the team as newcomers.

“Coaches are excited about the returning runners from indoor track and are looking forward to all of the young potential on the team,” Workman said. “We will be sad to graduate nine seniors.”
