The Highland volleyball team ended a two-match losing streak on Thursday with a 3-0 win over the Webutuck Warriors on Thursday at Highland School.

The Huskies won the match, 25-11, 25-12, 25-10.

“It’s difficult when you play a team that’s a little lower caliber than you,” Highland coach Colleen Giametta said. “It’s hard to raise your game up. You’re out of system a lot and it gets very funky. We started off really funky and you just had to make adjustments. The girls are really good at that.”

Amelia Delforno led the Huskies with 18 assists, five digs and two aces, while Christina Johnston had seven kills. Bethan Childs had eight kills, and Kelsey Whalen had five kills. Cadence Meltz had eight digs and one ace.

“Mainly our defense (has improved),” Giametta said. “The amount of digs we got against Spackenkill was incredible. My libero had 19 digs, and my other defensive specialist in the back row had nine.”

The Huskies were unable to avenge their early season loss to the Spackenkill Spartans, but they did take them to four sets in a 3-1 loss on October 3.

Meltz led the Huskies with 19 digs and two kills, while Johnston had eight kills. Navya Ruparelia had six kills and 13 digs, while DelForno had 13 assists and Emily Kandetzke had nine digs. Kelcey Whalen had six kills, two aces and four blocks.

Priscilla McReynolds had 13 kills, five aces and a block, for the Spartans, who won the match, 25-20, 25-17, 24-26, 28-18.

“Priscilla normally gets a lot of kills and she only ended up with 13,” Giametta said. “So, we really shut her down. We just had too many service errors and we couldn’t put it together. But it was still an amazing showing for us. I was very happy.”

Marlena DeLaurentis added two kills, two aces and 35 assists for Spackenkill.

The Huskies had three matches last week with matches against Onteora and Mount Academy, around a non-league contest against the Marlboro Dukes on Wednesday.

“I just tell the girls if we get better every single match, when it comes to the end of the season and we’re in sectionals, that’s when it counts for us,” Giametta said. “That’s when you have to peak and we’re working on that every week.”
