Huskies seek 4th straight Section 9 appearance

The Highland volleyball team continued its resurgence last year, reaching the Section 9 Class B semifinals before seeing their season end at the hands of Our Lady of Lourdes.

This year, the Huskies are looking to make their fourth straight berth in the Section 9 tournament.

The Huskies will lose outside hitters Katie Dauenheimer and Daniella Grant and setter Marissa Incorvaia from the team that went 10-5 and earned the fourth seed in the tournament.

Returning are libero Candence Meltz, middle hitters Angelina Esposito and Bethany Childs, outside hitters Christina Johnston and Navya Ruparelia, defensive specialist and setters Leah Klotz and Emily Kandetzke and setter Amelia Delforno.

They’ll be joined by newcomer Maddie Violaris on a team that doesn’t have any one particular standout. Coach Colleen Giametta said the Huskies will have to remain focused, determined and consistent every match.

“We do not have one player this year that sticks out as a superstar hitter or performer, but this team has athleticism, knowledge and the work ethic to become champions,” Giametta said. “We will spend our season focusing on putting all the parts together to win and achieve success. We will be a very competitive opponent to any team we face.”

The Marlboro Dukes lost Madison Callahan and Ava Davidson from last year’s 7-8 team. The Dukes also went 3-3 in the Mid Hudson Athletic League Division II.

Returning are Kalista Birkenstock, Jadyn Lunsford, Katie Thorne and Victoria Maher. They’ll combine with Gina Fiore and Sadie Casella as the Dukes aim to win the division and advance as far as they can in the upcoming Section 9 Class A tournament.

Marlboro’s enrollment didn’t jump, but the Dukes moved up as the New York State Public High School Athletic Association increased to six classifications, starting this season.

Other Class A teams include Beacon, Goshen, Liberty, New Paltz, Our Lady of Lourdes, Port Jervis, Saugerties and Wallkill.

“I am very excited for this season,” Marlboro coach Nicole Kitson said. “It is a great group of athletes who are already showing competitiveness and passion for the game. Looking forward to watching these girls play as a team.”
