Jennifer Salemo wins in Plattekill

Political newcomer Jennifer Salemo is the new Town of Plattekill Supervisor after defeating former Supervisor Judy Mayle.

Salemo, who had the Republican and Conservative party endorsements, outpolled Democrat Mayle 1,277 to 809 in election results released late Tuesday.

Salemo will succeed Republican Joseph Croce, who decided not to seek office again after serving as Town Supervisor since 2013. The Supervisor serves a two-year term.

The 50-year-old Salemo is the General Manager and part owner of Turtle Creek Golf Course.

Mayle was Plattekill’s Supervisor from 1992 through 2002.

Salemo said she was “very excited” with her win and was looking forward to the challenge of taking over as Supervisor on Jan. 1, 2022.

“It was an awesome experience campaigning and getting to know people,” she said after addressing a group of supporters at Turtle Creek. “I’m a down to earth person and I’m pretty new to this. But I think that was refreshing to a lot of people. Plus, I think my experience of running a business appealed to a lot of voters.”

“I thank everyone that supported us during this election and congratulate my opponent,” Mayle said after the results were announced.

Incumbents Dean DePew Sr. and Darryl Matthews, who both had the Republican and Conservative party endorsements, were re-elected to four-year terms on the Town Board. Matthews (1,313) and DePew (1,287) outpolled former Town Board member Cindy Delgado, a Democrat, who finished third in the race for two seats with 847 votes.

Town Highway Superintendent Robert Wager Sr., who was unopposed, collected 1,993 votes to earn another four-year term.  Wager, who was endorsed by the Republican, Democratic and Conservative parties, has served as the Highway Superintendent since 2010.

Matthews, who is retired, captured his second four-year term on the board.

DePew, who was first appointed to the Town Board in April of 2013 to fill a vacancy, has now won four elections to retain his seat. That included one in November of 2019 after he was forced to resign due to stipulations in his state retirement from the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. DePew is currently employed by the New York State Department of Conservation.
