Kevin V. Hunt: Three decades of public service

The passing of Kevin V. Hunt has left a void that will be impossible to fill. On November 9, 2023, Wallkill lost a pillar of integrity, compassion and commitment who spent more than three decades serving the town with unwavering dedication.

Hunt’s journey in public service began in 1988 when he joined the Environmental Commission in the Town of Shawangunk. In 1990, he took on the role of Town Councilman, a position that allowed him to engage directly with the concerns of residents. In 1992, he was elected Town Supervisor, a role he held for six years, leaving an indelible mark on our town’s development and growth.

Hunt’s public service extended beyond the boundaries of Shawangunk, as he later served as an Ulster County Legislator.

In recent years, Kevin served as Town Justice, a role that highlighted his deeply held belief in the importance of treating others with compassion, dignity, and respect. He understood that the people who appeared before him in the Justice Court were often individuals who had made mistakes but deserved an opportunity for redemption. His courtroom was a place of understanding and compassion, a space where individuals could find not just justice but also guidance to make amends and rejoin our community as responsible, contributing members.

In the wake of his unexpected passing, we remember a man who dedicated his life to public service, a man who earned our respect through his unwavering commitment to the values of compassion, dignity and respect. As we honor his memory, let us also strive to carry forward the principles he held dear, ensuring that our community continues to be a place of understanding, compassion and justice for all.
