Late goal upends Highland girls

The Highland girls’ lacrosse team led Friday night’s game against the FDR Presidents or was at least tied for most of the game.

Until late in the second half.

Hannah Guarino played tight defense against Highland’s goalkeeper, causing her attempt to clear the ball out of the Huskies’ defensive zone to turn over, and the Presidents were able to turn it into the game-winning goal in a 5-4 Presidents’ victory.

The Huskies took an early 2-0 lead in the first half and the Presidents came back to tie the score by the end of the first half.

The second half took on a similar narrative as the Huskies scored two more goals, the second of which was scored by Joann Williams, to take a 4-2 lead with 21:47 left in the game.

The Presidents answered with two goals of their own as Hannah Guarino tied the game with 12:10 remaining.

That set up the Presidents to score the decisive goal with 6:17 remaining.

The Huskies’ had their best chance to tie the game with 3:23 remaining in the game when Leah Klotz was awarded a direct shot, but her bounced shot was saved.

She had two chances, but both were unable to find their way into the cage and the Presidents ran down the clock.

Kaitlyn Rogers and Katelyn Amaral scored two goals each for the Presidents, and Jaidyn Jones made 16 saves. Guarino had a goal and an assist.
