Local teams eliminated in tournaments

It was a tough day for Town of Newburgh-New Windsor District 19 teams on Wednesday as both teams were eliminated from their respective tournaments.

The Majors team was eliminated in the District 19 championship game by a 9-2 loss to Cornwall, the only team in the tournament’s two brackets to own a win over Newburgh-New Windsor.

The Minors’ team, at the same time, also suffered its elimination going without a run in two straight games and getting eliminated just shy of the championship games by a 13-0 loss to one of Warwick’s two teams.

Two days earlier, the team suffered a 13-0 loss to Pine Bush to be bounced from the championship bracket.

Three days earlier, the Minors (11U) team faced an uphill climb, needing to win two games against Warwick to capture a District 19 flag. They suffered a 4-3 defeat to be eliminated from the tournament.

Pine Bush 14, Town of Newburgh-New Windsor 0
Two Pine Bush pitchers combined for a no-hitter in a win over Town of Newburgh-New Windsor on July 10 in Warwick.

Pine Bush led 2-0 after the first two innings before scoring four runs in the third inning and eight more in the fourth to end the game by the 10-run rule.

Newburgh was sent to the elimination bracket, needing a win to see Pine Bush again.

It continued to be a rough week for Town of Newburgh-New Windsor, as they suffered their second straight loss by double digits as they were eliminated from the tournament by Warwick on Wednesday in Pine Bush.

Warwick jumped on the board early with five runs in the first inning and added two more in the second to take a 7-0 lead. Warwick added two in the fourth and four more in the sixth inning.
Newburgh-New Windsor managed six hits.

Minors (11U)
Warwick 4, Town of Newburgh 3
Town of Newburgh fell two wins short of winning a District 19 championship when they were beaten in eight innings by Warwick on July 9 at Memorial Park in Warwick.

Warwick handed Town of Newburgh its only two losses in the tournament and took home the District 19 championship.

The game was tied 3-3 after six innings, and after a scoreless seventh, Warwick walked it off in the eighth inning to secure the victory.

Town of Newburgh-Newburgh-New Windsor rode an eight-run fourth inning to a victory over Port Jervis on July 10 in Middletown.

Jacob Lazarski had two hits, including a double and two RBIs and James Santo added a hit and an RBI. Johan Luis also had a single and an RBI.
Devin Prince earned the win on the mound.

Town of Newburgh-New Windsor 1, Washingtonville 0
Devin Prince doubled to left field, driving in James Santo with the lone run in Town of Newburgh-New Windsor’s win over Washingtonville on July 11 to advance to the championship game.

Jacob Lazarski went 5 1/3 innings for the win. He struck out five.


Cornwall 9, Town of Newburgh-New Windsor 2

Cornwall scored seven runs in the fourth inning as they won the District 19 Majors championship with a win over Newburgh-New Windsor on Wednesday.

Jacob Walsh provided Newburgh-New Windsor’s only run in the fifth inning with a two-run home run to center field.

Cornwall handed Newburgh both of its losses in the tournament.

The Hudson Valley Select scored six runs in the first inning and added five more in the fourth inning in a game that was called after four innings by the 10-run rule.

The Mid Hudson Tigers scored four runs in the fourth inning and added another four in the fifth in a win over the Hudson Valley Hustle on July 11.

The Mid Hudson Tigers scored in every inning on their way to an 11-run win over the Hudson Valley Hustle on Thursday.

The Hustle scored three runs in the third inning.

Beacon Bulldogs 4, Newburgh Knights 3
The Beacon Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a walk-off win over the Knights on Thursday at Memorial Park in Beacon.

The Bulldogs tied the game at 3-3 on a bases-loaded walk and then won the game on an infield hit.

The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Bulldogs took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Newburgh took the lead with two runs in the fourth.

Newburgh Knights 19, Black Dirt Barnstormers 5
The Newburgh Knights swept a doubleheader on Saturday in Florida.

Knights’ pitching only allowed one hit and rode a nine-run second inning to a 15-run win in the first game. The Knights pounded out 14 hits in a game called after four innings by the 10-run rule.

The Knights posted another nine-run second inning in the second game as they pulled out a 14-run lead. The Knights had a 19-1 lead after three innings, but the Barnstormers added four runs in the fourth inning but were unable to extend the game.

The Wallkill Panthers scored five runs in the third and fourth innings to post a victory over the Newburgh Red Storm on July 11 at Delano-Hitch Stadium in Newburgh.

After the Red Storm took a 3-0 lead after the top of the third inning, the Panthers scored two in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to one and then added three more in the fourth to take the lead.

The two teams battled to a tie in the second.

Edwin Nunez threw a complete game with nine strikeouts in five innings as the Newburgh Red Storm won the first game to begin a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Delano-Hitch Stadium in Newburgh.

John Mena drove in three runs and Victor Alicea had two RBIs and three runs scored. Kellen Pliler played strong defense in center field.

Omar Puello and Ryan Fitzpatrick combined for three hits to lead the Red Storm to a Game 2 victory. Gio Tirado got the start, striking out four over four innings.

Adrian Guerrero hit an infield single to drive in the winning run, leading the Newburgh Red Storm to a walkoff win over the Cortlandt Nationals on Wednesday at Delano-Hitch Stadium in Newburgh.

The Red Storm entered the seventh inning trailing by a run but tied the game when Michael Edge advanced on a wild pitch and scored on an error.

Edge had a hit and two runs scored, while Derek Vliestra had two hits and two RBIs.

Liam Clark had three hits and two RBIs, leading the Newburgh Red Storm to a win over the Blue Sox on Thursday at Goshen High School.

Xavier Vargas had a hit, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Nick Shala had two hits and two RBIs in the Red Storm’s win over the Marlboro Expos on Friday at Marlboro High School. Aidan Talsma doubled and drove in two runs. Noel Martinez had two hits to ignite the offense.

Aidan Hartwell singled and drove in a run for the Expos.

The Newburgh Red Storm and Wallkill Panthers split a doubleheader on Saturday at Delano-Hitch Stadium in Newburgh.

The Red Storm got two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Jo Alicea scored what turned out to be the game-winning run as they took the first game. Jackson Noel Martinez drove in a run for the Red Storm.

Dom Cipriani had two hits and an RBI for Wallkill.

The Red Storm were no-hit in the second game.
