Marlboro student reps provide updates

The Marlboro School Board student representatives Evan Wheatley and Harrison Solomon reported on activities that took place recently at all three school campuses.
 
At the Elementary School the Positive Behavior In Schools [PBIS] team launched a spirit week to reinforce the core values of the school and about programs that are offered, as students returned after the holiday break. Several themes were held: Tuesday students dressed in their cozy attire; Wednesday students wore the colors of the rainbow; Thursday students came in their favorite sports attire and on Friday the roles were reversed- teachers dressed like their students and students dressed like their teachers to embrace the MES family.
 
In early January, elementary school students engaged in their first character educational lesson, highlighting the topic of identity. The objective was for students to learn what identity means and to be able to talk about their identity.
 
Earlier this month members of the band participated in the Ulster County Music Educator’s Association All-County Band Auditions. Students had the opportunity to be selected for the All-County Band that will perform a concert in March.
On January 12 the Middle School and the High School attended the ‘No Place for Hate’ Conference in Albany. The Middle School is also preparing for their ‘One Book, One School’ Initiative in February. This year everyone will be reading ‘Brown Girl Dreaming,’ by the award-winning young adult author, Jacqueline Woodson.
 
At the Marlboro High School the Parent Teacher Student Association [PTSA] recently sponsored a virtual Career & College Planning event that provided useful information to the students about life after high school.
 
All students received an elective survey this week from Principal Ryan Lawler that will help in developing new electives in future school years.
 
In Athletics the Girls basketball team has been ranked #18 in NY state for Class A girls’ basketball and they currently hold an undefeated 5-0 record.
 
Reese Greathouse was recognized by the Poughkeepsie Journal as a “wrestler to watch” for his strong performance this season. Vic Maher and Juliana Juras both qualified for Indoor Track and Field Nationals for the weighted throw event. Juras also ranked in the top 10 in the state for the Shotput and qualified for the Nike Nationals in NYC.
 
The Marlboro Dukes bowling team was featured in the Daily Freeman and the Southern Ulster Times newspapers. The boys hold a 4-2 record and the girl’s team matched that 4-2 record. 
 
During the winter break Boys basketball beat FDR 43-39 at the Duane Davis Memorial Basketball Tournament.

Marlboro School Superintendent Michael Rydell pointed out that a new high definition, mounted camera is now being used during school board meetings.
 
“We’re able to now capture the entire meeting. I’m very excited about that and very appreciative of [Assistant Superintendent for Technology and Personnel] Mike Bakatsias and the entire IT Team for making that come to fruition,” he said.
