Shawn DeLaigle scored both touchdowns and intercepted two passes Saturday as the Marlboro varsity football team beat Highland 14-7 in the Black and Blue Bowl, extending the Dukes’ winning streak in the series that began in 2009.
DeLaigle, a senior running back and outside linebacker, accounted for most of Marlboro’s offense, rushing for 90 yards on 18 carries. He scored on a 7-yard run in the first quarter and a 2-yard run in the third. On defense, he picked off Highland senior quarterback Maison Bragg on the Highland’s first pass attempt of the second half and again on its next drive.
Senior kicker Lorenzo Caserto had the extra-point attempt after Marlboro’s first touchdown blocked, but the Dukes made up the difference by going for 2 after the second score. Senior tight end Shane Sullivan converted.
“I think it’s great,” Marlboro head coach Ryan Brooks said. “We’re ecstatic that we keep the trophy here another year. [The Black and Blue Bowl] is always a big deal, playing against our crosstown rivals, so there’s always extra stuff on the line here for this game.”
Senior quarterback Devin Robertson played a game-managing role, handing off to DeLaigle repeatedly. He completed 5 of 9 passes for 41 yards, throwing to junior running back Jayden Cutting (1 reception, 10 yards), Sullivan (1 reception, 8 yards) and sophomore wide receiver Elijah Lewis (2 receptions, 5 yards). Robertson also caught an 18-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Santino Caserto on Marlboro’s first drive.
Cutting rushed three times for 8 yards, Santino Caserto gained 1 yard on his only carry, and junior running back Amar’e Lane lost 2 yards on 3 attempts.
Marlboro intercepted four passes in all. Junior free safety Bruce Laboy had one and also recorded the Dukes’ only sack. Marlboro was penalized four times for 40 yards.
Highland’s lone touchdown came in the first quarter on a 10-yard catch by senior wide receiver Trevor Coates, who finished with four receptions for 46 yards. Junior wide receiver Christian Christie led all players with 61 receiving yards on four catches, and senior running back Luke Weise added two catches for 8 yards.
Senior running back Aubrey “AJ” Nugent led the Huskies’ ground game with 34 yards on 8 carries. Weise gained 10 yards on 2 carries, Coates lost 2 yards on his only run, and Bragg lost 8 yards on 6 attempts, including two fumbles he fell on for a combined loss of 18 yards.
Bragg and junior quarterback Jayden Vasquez combined to complete 11 of 16 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown, with four interceptions. Senior kicker Aiden Ryan missed Highland’s only field goal try, from 36 yards in the second quarter. Senior linebacker Thalan Riley and freshman nose guard Camren Bennett each had a sack. Highland was penalized three times for 30 yards.
“They’re a good team,” Highland head coach Thomas Schlappich said of Marlboro. “They had some injuries, we thought we could attack certain areas. We just made way, way too many mistakes on the offensive side.”
“On the defensive side, we struggled at times to stop them with the run game,” Schlappich said. “We had some good drives … [in] the first half especially, and then [in] the second half we struggled a bit, and [there were] just too many turnovers.”
Marlboro improved to 3-2 and has won two in a row after beating Red Hook last week. Highland fell to 4-2 and has lost two of its last three games after opening the season with three consecutive road wins.
