Montgomery seeks $2.5 million for sewer plant improvements

Posted

Sewage treatment has been a prime concern for the Town of Montgomery; in October 2023, the town and the Village of Maybrook signed an inter-municipal agreement granting the town access to Maybrook’s sewer plant, providing much-needed capacity for its residents. Last Thursday, June 13, the town board initiated its next step: a resolution for $2.5 million bonds to address critical areas of the town’s Sewer District 1.

These bonds would fund several improvements to the sewer plant, including installing a new pump station at Morrison Heights next to the existing pump on NYS Route 208 and enhancements to the facility’s furnishings, equipment, and other accessories. The board estimated that these upgrades would cost $2.5 million, the maximum possible cost, and labeled the project as an unlisted action under the NYS DEC’s State Environmental Quality Review Act, ruling that the facility’s implementations would not have a significant environmental impact.

The town board would pay off the principal and interest of these bonds each year and adjust the residents’ property taxes accordingly to meet these appropriations. Supervisor Steve Brescia would be responsible for several roles within this process, including the execution of the loan agreement, the bonds’ advertisement, and the allocation of bonds to the project’s contractors.

The board agreed that this project would be in the best interest of its residents, enhancing the current sewer services while helping the town reach a more ideal treatment plant.
