Newburgh duo wins Section 9 doubles title

When Aarav Shah decided to team with Henry Goings-Perrot for the postseason, the Newburgh Free Academy senior had one goal.

He wanted a Section 9 championship.

Mission accomplished.

Shah and Goings-Perrot beat Spackenkill’s Jeet Shanai and Edison Sung, 6-2, 6-0, to win the Section 9 boys’ tennis doubles championships on Thursday at MatchPoint Tennis Center in Goshen.

Shah and Goings-Perrot now advance to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships Friday through Sunday at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing.

They secured their spot in the state tournament when they beat Middletown’s Jaden Jones and Aaron Jones, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinals.

They opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Rhinebeck’s Zack Hart and Spencer Firestone, and followed that with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Beacon’s Scott Bunker and Charlie Klein in the quarterfinals.

It will be their first trip to the state tournament as a team, and the second trip for Shah as a doubles competitor. When he was in eighth grade, he teamed with his older brother Arnav to take second in Section 9, advancing to the state meet that way.

He finished third in Section 9 last year as a singles competitor, and also attended the state championships.

It’s the first trip for Goings-Perrot, a sophomore.
