Newburgh girls beaten in double overtime

The last time the Newburgh Free Academy girls’ soccer team squared up against the Pine Bush Bushmen, the Goldbacks suffered a six-goal loss.

The rematch was different, but the loss was the same.

However, the Goldbacks matched up better with the Bushmen, taking them into double overtime before Pine Bush senior Morgan Tubbs ended the game with a goal in the 93rd minute to hand them a 3-2 loss at NFA North.

“It’s 180 degrees different; you can’t even compare the two,” Newburgh coach Dave Doulin said. “We played better in the back. We played with a little more confidence, and we finished when we had the opportunities. It was an even game. Last game, I wouldn’t have expected another game like that.”

Just like in the first game between the two teams, Pine Bush struck first as sophomore Kathryn Cragan’s goal in the 15th minute gave the Bushmen an early lead.

The lead only lasted about 20 seconds, as the Goldbacks all-time leading goal scorer Marina Parodo blasted a shot from the left side inside the top far corner, over the reach of Pine Bush goalkeeper Shea Toback to tie the game at 1-1.

“That’s huge,” Doulin said. “We talk about that a lot. When we get down, that’s the time to strike. They’re excited. Come back out at them right away. We were able to come back twice from one goal down. I was happy about that, but we just needed one more.”

The Goldbacks had to come back again in the second half when Cragan scored a tie breaking goal in the 46th minute. However, this time, it took the Goldbacks longer to respond.

But they did, as senior Julia Leonard blasted a shot past Pine Bush’s second goalkeeper Grace Durke to tie the game at 2-2 and send the game into overtime.

“I thought we had a little bit of momentum,” Doulin said. “I thought we had a good chance. It’s Golden Goal, it’s anybody’s chance, and one good chance can end the game. So, I thought we had a fair chance.”

The game remained tied through the first 10-minute overtime, but Tubbs took advantage of her opportunity early in the second overtime period, scoring the game-winning goal and sending the Goldbacks to 3-3 in the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I.

The Goldbacks have two divisional games remaining, needing just one victory to qualify for the Section 9 Class AAA tournament. It’s possible a third encounter with the Bushmen is on the horizon.

The Goldbacks finished the week with a 5-3 win over the James I. O’Neill Raiders on Thursday.

“We’re playing well,” Doulin said. “We’re playing hard. We set up a tough schedule on purpose because we knew we wanted to be in a lot of close games. Win or lose, we’re getting better every time we play. That’s really the goal.”
