Newburgh lacrosse begins youth movement

Although it’s been a constant struggle and success has been difficult to come by, the Newburgh Free Academy boys’ lacrosse team is undergoing a bit of a youth movement this spring.

The Goldbacks have lost three players – Anthony Vasquez, Michael Vasquez, and Matt Wood – from last year’s four-win team.

As Newburgh coach Jim Horton enters his seventh season at the helm, he will welcome back Niko Buchholz, Brett Serafini, Elisha McLymore, Alex Hughes and Cole Mullarkey.

“With only two seniors on the team, Newburgh is leaning on younger players to help develop the team and push the program forward,” Horton said. “The current goal is to take the season on a game-by-game basis.”

The Goldbacks were scheduled to open their season on Monday with a road game against Eastchester before opening their local schedule with a road game against the Wallkill Panthers.

They’re scheduled to play their home opener on Tuesday against the Goshen Gladiators at Academy Field.
