Newburgh swimmers win two meets

The Newburgh Free Academy girls’ swim team won two meets last week, opening the week with a 101-67 win over the Marlboro Dukes and finishing the week with an 85-63 win over the Rhinebeck Hawks on Thursday at Newburgh Free Academy.

Elle Gerbes (200-yard breaststroke), AnnMarie Martin (200-yard individual medley), Allison VanDalinda (50-yard freestyle), Arabella Tantono (diving) and Leah Walsh (100-yard butterfly) all picked up victories for the Goldbacks.

Newburgh also won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:07.72 and took home the victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

With a large lead, the Goldbacks didn’t compete for points in the final three events.

Martin’s time of 2:35.58 in the 100-yard individual medley was a personal best, as was Penelope Batelic’s fourth-place time of 34.25 in the 50-yard freestyle.

Walsh also scored a season best when she won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:18.11.

Even though she didn’t compete for points, Gerbes qualified for the Section 9 championship meet with her time of 1:05.93. Vivian Best also qualified for sectionals with a season best 1:18.10 in the 10-yard breaststroke.
