The gold medal is coming back to Newburgh Free Academy.

Brady Danyluk won the boys’ 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.77 to win the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division I championship on Friday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

The meet ran for two days on Friday and Saturday.

Running from Lane 4, Danyluk placed second after the first 400 meters, trailing Shoreham-Wading River’s Michael Heubner, who started from the fourth position. He entered the second lap, trailing by about a second, but ran him down in the second lap to win the championship.

Danyluk may have lost about six seconds during the second lap, but Heubner lost about 10 seconds, falling to fourth place.

It was one of two state championships Danyluk was a part of as he anchored the winning 1,600-meter Division I relay team that posted a 3:19.14, teaming with Anthony Barrett, Anthony Burnett, and David Pinnock to edge Elmont by over a second. They came back the second day to finish second in the combined 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:21.41.

Elmont picked up the win in 3:20.99.

The Goldbacks’ 3,200-meter relay team of Joseph Lopez, Jimmie Kimbrough, Devin Batelic and Kendy Georges finished 27th on Saturday in 8:25.03.

Barrett finished fourth in the Division I boys’ 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.48 second and Burnett was sixth in 56.77.
Natalia Sweat finished 22nd in the girl’s 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:46.81.
