Newburgh Free Academy sophomore Josh Yan finished third at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association golf tournament on June 3 at the Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira.
Yan finished with a 36-hole score of139, just one stroke behind the leaders Joseph Dolezal of Section 8’s Wheatley School and Ken Fernandes of Section 1’s Horace Greeley. They both finished with a score of 138 and Dolezal won the tournament on the second playoff hole.
Yan shot five total under par, shooting a 70 on the tournament’s first day on June 2 and then shot a 69 in Round 2.
Josh’s older brother, Mark Yan, finished his senior year by tying for 28th place with four other golfers. He shot a 153 over the two-day tournament.
Section 9 finished eighth with a total score of 1,083. Section 1 won the overall championship with a score of 1,032.
Girls Golf
Newburgh’s Reagan Roth finished 60th at the NYSPHSAA girls’ golf championship meet on June 2 and 3 at the Edison Club in Rexford.
Kennedy Swedick of Section 2’s Albany Academy won the overall championship with a 36-hole score of 136, eight under par.
Roth finished 37 strokes over par and finished with a 36-hole score of 181. She shot a 96 on the first day of the tournament and 85 on the second.
Section 9 finished seventh with an overall score of 1,198. Section 2 won the overall team championship.
