A motorist driving on Rt. 9W over Mine Dock Rd. in Fort Montgomery spotted smoke and flames down below and called in what turned out to be a multi-alarm fire in a barn.

Fort Montgomery, with the assistance of Highland Falls, West Point, Stony Point, Cornwall, Storm King Engine #2, Vails Gate, New Windsor and Continental Village Fire Departments, put out a blaze in an empty storage barn/office on Sunday afternoon. As they battled that, they had to deal with a car parked in the property’s driveway and a brush fire that started across the street, while at the same time, protecting two buildings in very close proximity to the burning barn.

All three structures were believed to be empty at the time of the fire, which was first reported at about 3:45 p.m. Town of Highlands Police, Town of Highlands Ambulance Corps and Orange County fire investigators were at the scene, as was Orange & Rockland Utilities to cut power to the building.
