No-Shave November looms for Cornwall PD

At Tuesday’s Cornwall Town Board meeting the board was expected to again approve members of the Cornwall Police Department participating in No-Shave November. That means, during November you may well see some bearded and mustached police officers around town!

They grow that facial hair for a good cause – to benefit Operation Santa’s SLED, a program to support law enforcement officers and their families who are experiencing a personal crisis by purchasing Christmas gifts for the family, providing a cash donation to each family, and arranging for a special gift delivery that demonstrates support, encouragement and fellowship.

CPD Chief Joseph Gebert made the request to the board, asking for permission to suspend the General Order that requires officers to be clean shaven. He emphasized in his note to the board that participating officers would still need to keep facial hair neatly trimmed, and come December 1, it’d be back to no facial hair allowed. Gebert said officers participating would be making a $20 donation to Operation Santa’s SLED.

In another holiday-related matter on Tuesday’s meeting agenda, Philip Cameron, co-chair of the Cornwall Lion’s Club annual Wreath & Roping sale, asked the board for permission to sell holiday greenery on Town Hall property the weekends of November 30/December 1, December 7/8 and December 14/15.

The Lion’s Club, Cameron wrote in his letter to the board, “is very active in the community in keeping with our motto ‘We Serve’. We also donate a substantial amount of money to charities and organizations, and, of course, to give away money, we must first make it”. He said selling the wreaths and roping has been very successful since they have been running the campaign at the Town Hall location.

And, in one final holiday matter, Town Clerk Jenn McCormick announced last week that, again this year, Town Hall will serve as a drop-off location for the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys For Tots campaign. New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off during regular business hours now through December.
