NW considers resolution on Plattekill Landfill

Posted

The Town of New Windsor will consider a resolution for the following month on the proposed landfill site in the Town of Plattekill. The resolution would be prepared by the town attorney’s office prior to the vote.

According to Town of New Windsor George Meyers, Town of Newburgh Supervisor Gil Piaquadio had reached out to Meyers on the issue of the landfill. The concern brought forward by Meyers would be that runoff from the landfill could potentially make its way into Chadwick Lake, which serves as an alternative drinking water source for Newburgh and New Windsor.

Back in March, the Town of Newburgh had voted on a resolution of opposition to the landfill, as the waste from the landfill drains into the tributaries for the Quassaick Creek, which in turn drains into Chadwick Lake and that reservoir. Chadwick Lake also serves as the Town of Newburgh and Marlborough’s sources of drinking water along with providing water to other areas and schools within the town.

Similarly to the Plattekill landfill resolution, Councilman Stephen Bedetti also commented about the Indian Point resolution that was also requested to appear on next month’s agenda. The Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in Buchanan came under heavy scrutiny from the public and elected officials over plans to discharge materials back into the Hudson River. The plans to move forward with this particular process came to a halt back in mid-April.
